Brethren Voices - Everyone Deserves a Home

Show Details

The Modesto Church of the Brethren, Modesto, California seems somewhat unique. According to Pastor Andrew Sampson, the church is a place where we take the socially constructed barriers, and we break them apart. The difference? We are broken and a new community is formed which is strengthened by those very things, which society says should divide us. We're stronger because we are all unique, but we're all, together with those differences still intact. "Brethren Voices" host, Brent Carlson met with Andrew Sampson and found that their involvement in the Modesto community, seems to have energized its members. The church building is used 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. For 20 years, the congregation has been involved with Family Promise of Modesto. Transitional housing is provided to "Unhoused Families," of the community. It's a way to assist families to get to the point, so they can find a house of their own. The program shares the story of "ups and downs" that the congregation has experienced in that venture. Andrew Sampson who was a Brethren Volunteer at Camp Myrtlewood, in Southern, Oregon, describes the Modesto congregation as a "beautiful thing." Numerous groups of various faith perspectives, including a radio station, and family shelter, occupy the church building. In summary, Sampson says with a smile, "We are a beautiful community."
